Gem of the week: Agate, the banded beauty

Gem of the week: Aagate

It looked like Agate was the must-have gemstone for Harper Bazaar’s October issue and it feels like a stone that mixes well with the theme for this week, southwest style.  As you can see in the recent issue of Bazaar, these stones can be added to a necklace, earrings, and cuffs.  The stone provides the earthy look which lends itself to the southwestern style which is all about the outdoorsy element.

No gemstone is more creatively striped by Nature than agate, chalcedony quartz that forms in concentric layers in a wide variety of colours and textures. -Gemstone.org

Agates are apart of the Quartz family.  The name Agate comes from the river Achetes in Sicily, where Agates were found in ancient times.  During Ancient times, Indians and Egyptians used the stones for jewelry.  From the fifteenth century and still today, Germany has been a strong location for stonecutting and polishing.  There are a wide variety of Agates to choose from in color and the stone has stabilizing and strengthening influences that are said to build lasting connections.
